DOMESTICITY Affordable housing competition - 2017

A competition for Affordable Housing for the City of Atlanta.

In order to create healthy and affordable housing, development should incorporate responsible design that uses durable materials to ensure the units are energy and water efficient, have excellent air quality and is a safe place to live. domesti CITY presents Atlanta with an opportunity to develop an alternative solution for affordable housing that is attractive, easily replicable, cost effective and quick to construct.

The conceptual design of this housing development is based on a simple module of a 8’ wide by 45’ long by 9’-6” high shipping container. These modules are combined to produce a mix of single room occupancy (SRO) units, 1, 2 and 3 bedroom housing units. This module is also used to create retail space, administrative and management functions, community use areas, pods for  growing vegetables, and a transit shelter.

This solution represents an attractive, creative and innovative design for this site that incorporates sustainable features that produce a return on investment. The intent was not to replicate the high density housing under construction in downtown and midtown Atlanta, but create a medium density development along the Metropolitan Parkway Corridor that provides open space, urban farming and other amenities with a build-out timeline that surpasses traditional construction methods.
